Polynesian tattoo designs are so intricate that if you don’t have one, you may wonder how someone sits through all that pain, the answer is numbing creams such as TKTX, and there are no tktx numbing cream side effects which make this cream even more popular. But they are usually worth the trouble and the time as most people who wear them will tell you. Polynesian people have over thousand of years evolved a culture that’s admirably distinct.

All the people of Polynesia came from a common homeland, although no one seems to know exactly where this was. They then spread to islands on the Pacific, and their isolation from the modern world allowed them to develop unique culture and art that had no external influence. The word Polynesia in Greek means 1000 islands. They are dotted all over the pacific, but there are some that are more popular than others. New Zealand, the home of the Maoris is one of them where tattoo art is still considered a very vital part of their culture.

There is also Hawaii, whose tattoo art is rather different from other Polynesian tattoos. They tend to have a more personal meaning and are usually representations of flowers or animals like turtles and other tribal aspects.

The little known Easter Island is also a home of Polynesian tattoo designs. They have a great variety of designs – you will find boats, spears, birds, geometrical patterns, and more. The people traditionally believed that tattoos made their skin sacred and thus one was in a state to communicate with the gods.

Samoan tattoos are amongst the more common ones among serious tattoo enthusiasts, those who can endure the hours of pain it takes to imprint a large tattoo. The larger the tattoo, the higher you are considered in terms of social status. That’s the reason why many music artists who want to make a statement go for these.

There are others as well: Tonga, Cook Islands, French Polynesia (Tahiti), the Marquesa Islands as well as other little ones that are less well known.

Polynesian tattoo design is a common factor amongst all these islands. In fact, the art of tattooing is very similar amongst them all. The meaning of tattoos is also universal among these islands; they had no written language, and tattoos were used as an expression of social rank.

Why were tattoos so significant to the Polynesian people?

They were considered a symbol of courage. The process to get one was and still is rather painful, and a lot of courage and perseverance were needed. Even today, a single tiny tattoo doesn’t compare to a full body tattoo. That takes patience and a certain degree of pain tolerance. Polynesian tattoo designs marked the transition to adulthood from childhood. It was a rite of passage. Many rites of passage are usually a painful experience, but they are meant to instill courage into the recipient. They are done to show that one is ready for a life of challenges. A man was considered more attractive with a Polynesian tattoo design on. They were also a talisman – they offered protection from evil spirits. The culture amongst Polynesians had strong leanings towards belief in evil spirits. Tattoos told a person’s story. By looking at their tattoo design, you could tell their social status, their achievements, and their journey through life.

Much of this has been carried down to modern-day Polynesian tattoo designs. Tattoo parlors will offer those that represent social status as well as those that represent deep religious beliefs. Some people will also have them done as a sign of honor.

Polynesian tattoo designs are an art form in themselves, and if you get to understand their meaning and can bear to have them done, they are a good choice.

SPIDER (2002, David Cronenberg) – Director Cronenberg is widely known for his shocking horror films “Videodrome”, “The Fly” and “Dead Ringers” but he made this quiet, subtle but rather twisted psychological drama about a mentally-disturbed man named Dennis “Spider” Cleg (Ralph Fiennes, who gives a quiet yet powerful performance) who checks himself into a halfway house and there we witness flashbacks to his childhood.

Together with him, the audience goes into a journey to the past of a deeply troubled man. The film itself plays like a spidery web slowly but surely unraveling facets of what made “Spider” who he is today. In addition to Fiennes, Miranda Richardson also gives not one but THREE knock-out supporting performances that have to be seen to be believed. Despite the lack of exploding heads and disgusting metamorphosis, this film will haunt you for days on in with its haunting imagery.

GASLIGHT (1940, Thorold Dickinson) –

No, not the 1944 Hollywood version where Ingrid Bergman won her first Oscar. The first version of the play hails from Britain and stars Anton Walbrook and Diana Wynyard in the roles played by Charles Boyer and Ingrid Bergman respectively in the Hollywood version. As much as great the Hollywood version was, the British version still deserves to be seen nevertheless since Wolbrook outdoes Boyer in the villainous husband role.� Thankfully, the DVD of the 1944 version also includes this version will score more viewers.

A WOMAN OF PARIS (1923, Charles Chaplin) –

This is Chaplin’s first purely dramatic film. It is also the first film he directed which does not feature him or his famous “Tramp” character at all. His appearance in this film consists

of only a 5 second barely noticeable and utterly unrecognizable cameo as a dock worker.

Edna Purviance plays Marie St. Clair a woman who experiences the joy and the tragedy of love involving her artist fiance and being a mistress to a wealthy but boorish aristocrat. The drama involved is almost worthy of Shakespeare. The film was a box-office disappointment upon release, but thankfully, renewed interest in Chaplin has kept it alive and is now respected as one of the Tramp’s most underrated directorial works.

THE NAKED KISS (1962, Samuel Fuller) –

This film opens with a hooker murdering a man who owes her money. Yes, this movie was ahead of its time and pretty daring. It concerns a prostitute (Constance Towers who gives an outstanding performance) who hides out in a small town where she plans to go straight but finds her past is making it difficult for her to do so. Directed by maverick director Fuller, the film’s themes still hold relevance and resonance even after over 40 years.

THE LIFE AND DEATH OF COLONEL BLIMP (1943, Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger) –

The duo of Powell and Pressburger are most famous for their masterpieces “The Red Shoes” and “Black Narcissus” but this film is their first Technicolor masterpiece and is one of their best. Made during World War II, this film is about the life and loves of a good-natured distinguished army colonel Clive Candy (Roger Livesey).

The film’s funny, romantic, and heartbreaking particularly during the scene where Candy’s German soldier friend (Anton Walbrook, another great performance from him) relates why he fled Germany for America. This scene is particularly affecting because you know that when this was shot, World War II hasn’t ended. Another film that simply must be seen.  

SPIES (1928, Fritz Lang) –

German director Fritz Lang is a pioneer. He revolutionized the science-fiction genre with “Metropolis”. He virtually invented the serial killer movie with “M” but did you know he also invented the spy genre? This silent film has all the new cliches of the genre: beautiful duplicitous women, gunplay, chases, betrayals, disguises, etc. Fans of James Bond and “Mission: Impossible” have a lot to be thankful for this film.

DON’T LOOK NOW (1973, Nicolas Roeg) –

This film is probably most famous for the steamy sex scene between lead stars Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie that is so steamy that there are rumors that it was real. But the film is much more than that. The film is a twisty, disturbing supernatural thriller about a couple who recently lost their young daughter. The husband (Sutherland) keeps getting disturbing visions and dreams about her death which intensifies when they meet a clairvoyant woman while working in Venice. It all culminates in a shocking denouement and a whopper of an ending that’ll surely haunt you for days.

MYSTERY TRAIN (1989, Jim Jarmusch) –

Before Quentin Tarantino made the non-linear, multi-storied narrative famous with “Pulp Fiction”, Jim Jarmusch has already done a film with a similar structure. A young Japanese couple (Masatoshi Nagase and Youki Kudoh) obsessed with 1950’s American music (Carl Perkins and Elvis Presley) check in a seedy hotel in Memphis. There they encounter various other quirky characters who have their own quirky story to tell. The film in addition to being funny and perceptive also has a killer soundtrack.

DAMN YANKEES (1958, Stanley Donen and George Abbott) –

The Broadway musical is quite famous. But oddly enough the movie version is by and large not as famous. It may not be perfect but the film version has a lot of things going for it. The Faust tale set to music and America’s national past time has something for everyone including Bob Fosse’s superb choreography and Gwen Verdon’s knock-out of a performance which she originated on Broadway. Her number, “Whatever Lola Wants” is alone worth the price of the rental.

KWAIDAN (1964, Masaki Kobayashi) –

This film is a quartet of ghost stories based on the writings of Lafcadio Hearn, a Greek-born American who lived in Japan. The first one is “The Black Hair” about a man who divorces his true love to marry for money but his first wife has something unexpected up her sleeve. The second is “The Woman in the Snow” about a man who is saved by a mysterious woman under the condition he never tells anyone about her but let’s just say something happens years later. The third is a disturbingly gory tale and my personal favorite called “Hoichi the Earless” about a blind musician who is so good a ghostly imperial army wants him. The fourth, “In a Cup of Tea” is about a man who keeps seeing a mysterious face in his cup of tea. Creepy and imaginative, this is a film you won’t soon forget.

Okay; so you’ve just stumbled onto this great thing called the Law of Attraction, and you hear that with it, you can literally attract anything you want to you. You just have to learn how to use it, right?

Sort of. While the Law of Attraction is very powerful (and it will work “for” you, even if it’s not quite doing what you want), learning to use it effectively means working in tandem “with” it, not trying to manipulate it. Why is that? Because you can’t manipulate it. As the illustration from the last article (The Law of Attraction: Real, or Just so Much Hype?) demonstrated, it’s just like gravity; you can’t command or manipulate it. You can only work with it.

Once you understand how it works, however, you can work with it (respectfully) to bring what you want to you. It’s useful to start small, though, because you’ll want to become acclimated to it before you try to do too much. Trying to ask for and do too much at first will cause one of two things to happen. Either you won’t succeed, which will only reinforce your feelings of skepticism and failure, or you’ll succeed but then crash and burn, because you’re not ready for it. (Think about all those celebrities who suddenly experience success, only to self-destruct in a few years because they’re not ready for the sudden influx of “everything they ever wanted.”)

So start small. Pick something realistic that you know you would be comfortable with now, but that’s just ever so slightly out of your realm of current reality. Say, for example, that you need to get new tires for your car pretty soon, and you haven’t the slightest idea of how you’re going to get money for them.

This is a great situation to pick, because you’re not desperate (which can only make it harder for the Law of Attraction to work in your favor), but you do really need and want new tires. Normally, you’d also have to figure out a way to get them, but that’s where the Law of Attraction really kicks in and does its magic.

There is an interesting article in the Manifestation Magic Review for 2020 that you can find online that has a detailed analysis of the situations you are likely to encounter in your quest to achieve your desire where the law of attraction plays an important role but it requires strong imagination power from your side.

So, sit down and visualize new tires on your car. What are they going to look like, and what is it going to feel like to kick them or run your hand along them, and know that they are there, solid and secure? Think about that; visualize having them, and relax and really know that this can happen.

Now, forget about it. Simply turn this need over to the universe and let it bring you those new tires. Watch for this to happen in a number of different ways, too. Maybe, for example, you stumble on a discount tire place that sells tires for much cheaper than you thought possible, so that you can afford them. Or, maybe a friend offers to give you his tires because he really wants different ones for his car. Or, maybe you suddenly get a job offer you weren’t expecting, so that money worries are no more and you can afford them.

A final thought. You might think, “Aw, that’s not the magic of the Law of Attraction working! That’s just reality,” — and you’d be right. People who are really successful with the Law of Attraction know that Law of Attraction is *always* about reality. In other words, you attract your reality every second – whether you know it or not.
